Native to the warm waters off the Florida Coast. Marine sponges can grow to be large, beautiful features of an ocean ecosystem. Each sponge vase is harvested, hand-picked and the shapes are endless. Serving as a filter system in the water with natural defenses and a safe hiding place for small fish and other creatures, but large enough to shelter crabs, shrimp, and starfish.
These oddly shaped sea sponges resemble a brain-like appearance. They are strong and dense, but soft and compressible when wet. The osculum is the structure of the living sponge allowing currants of water to pass through equal to the sponge's body size.
Natural Sea Sponges are an amazing pore-bearing creature of the sea filtering water, collecting bacteria and have a very important job fueling productivity throughout the ecosystem for many years. Cleaning Sea Sponges: Sea Sponges are naturally stiff when dry and become soft when wet. Inspect the sponge for sea particles. Natural sponges may occasionally contain small shells or coral fragments. Washing before use is recommended. Using a 1-1 ratio of water and hydrogen peroxide will clean the sponge if it becomes discolored. A few drops of tea tree essential oil in 1 cup of warm water is an effective germicide and will eliminate any odors in the sea sponge. Another method of 1 Tablespoon white vinegar and 1 cup of water will also be helpful in maintaining your sponge. Color of the sea sponge may vary within the sponge itself.
